Trek through the Sutter Buttes, by waterfall, with optional summit lunch.
Near:Sutter, CA
Distance:5.5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:2267 ft
Hike Time:3.5 hours
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots

Summary: The Sutter Buttes is a landmark that can be seen for well over 100 square miles in the Sacramento Valley. While they are privately owned, The Middle Mountain Foundation, with the help of landowner Marty Steidlmeyer, holds the Ridge Trek hike periodically during the spring & fall. This particular hike costs $45 and gives a wonderful taste of the interior of the Sutter Buttes. You will hike along roads and along trails, along with a history lesson from someone who grew up in the buttes. After passing a water reservoir, you'll see a waterfall from above. A little farther along at a second reservoir, you'll get a geology lesson and learn about the creation of the buttes. The final portion is a 700-foot climb to a cave, where you will eat lunch. The hike back takes a slightly different route. You can see what the Middle Mountain Foundation has to offer by visiting their website at, as well as reserve hikes and order merchandise.
Trailhead: Middle Mountain Foundation hikes meet at Sutter High School, Sutter, CA. From there, you will carpool to the trailhead, located on private land within the Sutter Buttes. To prevent trespassing, I cannot give directions to the trailhead. (Lat:39.23168 Lon:-121.84674)
