Summary: This is a fun hike through dramatic rock formations and continuous panoramic views of both Simi and the San Fernando Valleys. In the spring, the green grass and rocky formations make for a stunning contrast, and wildflowers dot the trail along the way. On a clear day, you can see to the ocean. The last couple of hundred yards to the trail can be a bit of a scramble, but the views are worth the effort. Trailhead: From Highway 118/Simi Valley Freeway in Simi Valley, exit on Kuehner Drive. Drive 3 miles south to the highway 118 east on-ramp. (along the way, Kuehner becomes Santa Susana Pass Road). Turn left, crossing over the freeway, and park 0.1 miles ahead at the end of the road. It's a challenging hike, great for cardio and improving balance, since the trail's rough and bumpy. The rock formations are fascinating and the green hills and marine layer up at the top are pretty nifty. It's like being in Scotland or Ireland. On the trail July 10. Encounter a six foot rattler on the north side of the upper trail. First sighting after several trips. Stay in the middle of the road!! This is still a great conditioning hike. Reached the 2600-ft. summit three different ways in last few weekends. Start at Kuehner (elev. 1200ft) for a more interesting ascent, or at Corriganville through a wildlife tunnel under the 118 for a more strenuous climb. Main trail can be busy on cool sunny weekends, but always courteous. Only shade is what you bring with you. I've gazed at the summit of this trail from my house since I moved into the area in '06. Been up to the summit 3 times in the last 4 weeks, gazing at my house and taking in breathtaking views (visually and literally). Last Sunday there was a light fog over the Valleys it read like the Ocean Pacific with ambient sound of "surf" from the 118. i hike this trail regularly...however i don't believe it is 6miles rt. i hiked it tuesday 3/9 in 1:45 with an injured ankle. unles you spend a lot of time up top, i'm sure even a slow hiker can go up and back well under 3hrs. There is no time to hike this trail like a sunny winter day. There was a lot of water flowing today-even some little cascades gugling among the rocks. From the peak we could see the Channel Islands to the west, and what looked like the distant rise of the San Jacintos in the east. Coyotes were out and trotting across the trail. This is my favorite trial. In 2009 I hiked this at least 10 times. It is being a great workout. Only once I was able to see pacific ocean from this peak.
