great moderate hike with mountain views, waterfalls, and natural pools
Near:Tucson, AZ
Scenery:
Distance:5.5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1500 ft
Hike Time:3 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This is a great modeate hike that starts out with a well defined and wide trail. Stay on this path until you reach a trail marker that will turn you right. From the marker, the trail will take a slow elevation gain along Montrose Canyon, which will be to your right. Stay on this trail until you reach the romero pools. The pools is a great place to take a lunch or in the warmer months, go for a swim. After a good rain, you will enjoy flowing waterfalls and streams, as well as gorgeous mountain views and desert landscapes. As a cautionary warning be careful when walking around the pools since the rocks are very slippery and wet. This is always a great hike to take. However, after a good rain storm, the waterfalls and streams will be active, which will add to the overall hiking experience.
Trailhead: If you were headed North on Oracle rd. (HWY 77) a couple miles past 1st. but before you get to Tangerine Rd. make a right into Catalina State Park. You should see a sign for the park. Head east until you come to the Ranger Station, there is a $6.00 daily fee. Continue east until you see the parking lot, and few feet south of the parking lot is the trailhead. You wanna for surely do this hike in the summer and hope that the water is flowing. It's a good leg blast to the end, but very short and can be done in a few hours or less. The pools are cool, a couple you can get into but be prepared to freeze your b's off.

We went this last week and the waterfalls were flowing. At least one pool is deep enough and big enough to swim in. The water was over my head but very cold. It was great after a hot hike to take a bracing plunge. What are you waiting for? Go now!

I love this trail! Swimming in the pools is the best reward after hiking the trail on a hot day. Definately pack a lunch, relax and enjoy this hike to the fullest.

This is one of my favorite hikes. The rocks on the trail can be a bit jagged and pointy so its important to have good hiking shoes, but overall great hike!! The pools are beautiful and you can usually find your own pool to just hang out at with none else around. And in the hotter months its great for taking a dip in and coolin off.

I have done this as a day hike and as a backpacking hike, it is a good hike. It is not very hard and has great veiws in winter of other peaks. I would recommend this hike for anyone.

I did this hike while visiting over Thanksgiving weekend and really enjoyed it. A good, moderate hike to a relaxing area by the pools. I even went beyond the "tourist" area a bit and found a little waterfall with no one else around. I would also recommend doing the little loop trail on the way back, as at least in the autumn, there were some beautiful colors to be found along the way.

I just got off that trail about 2 hours ago and I loved every minute of it. It was my second time and I plan to visit again soon. My friends and I hiked off the beaten path (I don't recomend it for young children or older folks) down a canyon to a 20ft. waterfall you can see from the path. It is a beautiful view but a trecherous hike. the waterfall isn't deep so don't expect to swim but we brought lunch and cooked it up on a nice sandy spot right next to the fall. The path itself is beautiful and scenic but if you like to adventure I redomend finding your own way down to the waterfall. you cant miss it, its way off the path you can see it right off the trail.
