Summary: This is a easy half-hour hike that is suitable for all ages. In fact, on this hike my children and I were joined by a couple in their late sixties. We started the Geology Trail at the trailhead and enjoyed the well-maintained trail and scenery as we followed the trail. Where the Geololgy Trail meets the Nature Trail, we turned right (east) and continued along on the Nature Trail until arriving back at our starting location. The Ruffner Mtn Nature Center is located only minutes from downtown Birmingham, yet offers a chance to totally escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy the wilderness. The Nature Center also houses animals which have been wounded and can not return to the wilderness, as well as, several snakes, lizards, turtles and even a flying squirrel inside the park office. The Nature Center offers the opportunity for people of all ages to learn about the wildlife that is native to Alabama. Trailhead: From Exit 132 in Birmingham, follow Oporto Madrid Blvd to Rugby Ave. Turn right on Rugby Ave. Follow Rugby Ave to 81st Street. Follow 81st Street to the entrance of Ruffner Mountain Nature Center. The trailhead to all trails at Ruffner Mountain are accessed next to the pavilion. There is no charge to enter the park, but donations are accepted.
