Summary: Hiking up Sunset Crater has been forbidden for years, but the smaller Lenox Crater gives you a feel for what it is like to grind your way up the cinder slopes of an extinct volcano. The climb is quick if a little breathy (especially if you are not used to the 6300 foot plus altitude) and the view at the end is worth the stop. Watch your footing on the way up: knuckle-sized cinder-stones will roll you right back down to where you started if you aren't careful. Don't expect to look down into a crater: this has been filled in long ago by the forces of erosion. It may as well be called Lenox Butte. Trailhead: From Flagstaff: Take Route 89 north for 12 miles. Turn right at the Sunset Crater turnoff, continue three miles (one mile past the Visitor Center) to the trailhead. Park on the left, opposite the trail.
