Summary: We are so grateful to the Spring Mountain Youth Camp for their work building and maintaining trails in the Spring Mountains. Almost every trail in Red Rock Canyon, Mt. Charleston, Kyle, and Lee Canyons can be enjoyed thanks to these hard-working young people. If you're very lucky, you'll come across these work crews and you can tell them thank you in person. This trail is named for SMYC and it is a great way to honor Clark county's rehabilitation program for troubled children. You won't need any help following this trail - it is lined with rocks as it crosses the wash, and cut through deep red soil along the slopes, even having stone steps to assist in loose footing and steep climbs. I absolutely love how you wind up and down the gentle hills before Icebox Canyon, each turn giving you a different perspective of Sandstone Quarry, La Madre, and Turtlehead Peak. If you're lucky enough to hike this trail after or during the rain, you're in for a real treat! Trailhead: 18 miles W of Las Vegas Blvd. on Charleston Ave. (SR 159) to Red Rock entry (fee) station. Follow the signs along the 13 mile scenic loop, turning R towards Willow Springs, parking at the first parking lot; which is for Lost Creek (vault RR & signs). Follow the sign from the TH towards Lost Creek waterfall, keeping an eye out for your turn (signed) about 1/4 mile to begin SMYC. You could also begin the SMYC from Icebox Canyon - the signed junction for SMYC & Dale's Trail is less than 1/2 mile from Icebox Canyon parking/TH. There is also a vault RR and signage at this parking area. The SMYC is a super connector trail and combined with Dale's Trail is about 7 miles RT. Add the Arnight/Knoll trails (Oak Creek parking/TH) to SMYC & Dales to make it the Escarpment Base trail for over 10 miles one way (car shuttle required). If you begin at Lost Creek and end up at Oak Creek, you'll cross 3 canyons (Icebox, Pine Creek, Oak Creek) on this incredible all-day trek!
