Summary: If you LOVE desert hiking, are not afraid to travel off-trail through cactus and rough rocks, and enjoy exploring on your own; this might be a hike you'd enjoy. It is especially important that you understand you cannot cross the Spring Mtn. Ranch State Park land, even where it is not fenced. You need to be completely aware of their boundary. Generally, you will need to hike at or above the 4800' mark (actually onto the base of Sandstone Bluffs) to reach Sandstone Springs without crossing their land. (Not all land at Red Rock Canyon belongs to the BLM/Natl Cons.Area -- some is still privately held, or owned by the state of Nevada). There are a couple of fairly nice burro trails leading you along the base of the bluffs, past Lake Harriet, and to Sandstone Springs. Area sees use by burros, deer, coyote, fox, & even the rare mountain lion (look for tracks), so be very aware of your surroundings. Respect the historical artifacts left by Wilson family & ranchers.
Trailhead: Red Rock Canyon is located 18 miles W of Las Vegas Blvd. on Charleston Ave. (SR 159). Go past the entry (fee) station/visitor's center and continue 4 miles SW on SR 159. You will NOT be entering the fee area or the scenic loop. Park along the highway, (off pavement) at the parking area marked First Creek. Follow the wide, well-worn trail heading W towards First Creek Canyon. After you've passed the turnoff to the waterfall, yet before you reach the mouth of the canyon, look for well worn burro trail(s) leading S (sharp left turn) along the base of the Sandstone Bluffs towards Sandstone Canyon (sits between Spring Mountain Ranch State Park and the escarpment). This is a VERY difficult trail for dogs because it's cross country (burro trail) and thick with cactus -- dangerous for dog paws! No water, restrooms, or shade of any type along this hike.
