Summary: From the parking lot, head straight towards the towering cliffs , bearing left at the Sandy's canyon trailhead marker. Walk over to the edge of the canyon and behold a stunning talus field of volcanic rock. About a mile up the trail, bear right and drop down into Sandy's canyon with its alternating forests and meadows. When you reach a junction with the Arizona Trail, bear right for a few hundred feet to a stunning pink cliff in an open meadow area. Double back and head north on the Arizona trail. At about the 2 mile mark you will come to huge sandstone cliff, with a shallow cave like opening, which is the entry point of the deep recesses of Walnut Canyon. You will pass a number of caves on the right, with the most spectacular being a 30 foot high cave that goes back 100 foot into the mountain then bears left through a small tunnel that pops out back onto the trail after crawling on your hands and knees for 100 feet or so. This is our turn around point. Trailhead: From Flagstaff, drive 5.7 miles south on Lake Mary Road. Just after the 2nd cattle crossing, turn left into the Canyon Vista Campground. Drive all the way back to the end of the campground and park in the day use area. There is a trailhead kiosk at the end of the parking lot. Reviewed by Chloe on 8/18/2008 Northern Arizona has had a fairly good monsoon season this year (2008) allowing vegetation to flourish...including POISON IVY. Hikers: be aware! The Walnut Canyon (Sandys Canyon) area is overgrown with this poisonous plant! Ouch! Go somewhere else or, if you must, wear long pants, and have that bottle of "Tecnu" handy... 
Reviewed by Chris on 3/2/2007 I used to go out there a lot, living nearby. This was always a favorite because the trees and the canyon walls are absolutely beautiful! Go early in the day and take a ton of water and food because you will want to keep going, exploring and seeing more... Go up to the top of Fisher's Point and look out over where you walked from. On the way back to the trail head, break off to the left and go up to Marshall Lake. Man I miss that area. If you are there, get out from in front of your computer and start hiking, no excuses!! 
Reviewed by PyrtHkr on 6/21/2006 I've enjoyed hiking & mtn biking these trails & the junction @ Fisher Point seems to draw all sorts of outdoor enthusiasts. The AZT south to Marshall Lk & then on across Anderson Mesa is a good off shoot as is the AZT north to the Walnut Canyon NP (bring extra H20 on this leg).
Reviewed by Kerry on 6/27/2005 This is a great trail, it is easy and fun for both hiking and mountain biking, I prefer to enter in to the area near the NAU Campus at the end of Lone Tree Rd. Neat geology!
Reviewed by jordan on 10/3/2004 liked most of all the diversity of tree species in one place (ie:mixed conifer zone trees like aspen and douglas fir mixed in with canyon riparian vegetation)also the relative solitude on midweek days like wednsday with very few people passing through

Reviewed by jack on 10/20/2003 having been going to fisher point since mid 70's. Never gets old, just my knees. Found a second cave today, quarter of a mile past the main cave. Couple of bikers to deal with but mostly very quite hiking in and out from lake mary road. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
