Summary: Another cold day staring temps were -2 degrees Fahrenheit and by the end it went up to a warm 2 degrees. With 7.5 inches of fresh snow. This loop is more suited for cross country skiing or snowshoeing, although it can be hikes as long as you dont mind hiking on paved roads. The park service closes Sawmill and Ridge from Dec21 to March 21 and sometimes sooner if snow covered. This is an excelent area for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. You will pass through hardwood forests, swamps, streams, lake and you will even get a glimpse of a Spruce swamp that is more typical to areas much farther North. You may even see a Dog Sled Team run by you. This area is well know for Dog Sledding and usually in February there is a Dog Sled race. The area is also shared with snowmobiles but dont worry they are very respectful when passing by, that is if you even see them. What makes this part of the park nice during the winter months is the different loops that can be done.
Trailhead: From town of Sussex take rt. 23 north about 8 miles. Once you come to High Point Park Office you will continue another 1/4 mile. Then Make a left onto Sawmill rd. Go 100 yards and make right onto Ridge Rd. Then park in Winter lot. (Lat:41.30878 Lon:-74.68135)
