Summary: Schaeffer Farm is a popular hiker/biker/equestrian trail complex near the South Germantown Recreational Area and Soccerplex. The yellow trail is the longest of five color-coded trails. Using multiple trails, many variants are available. The trail can also be combined with the Hoyle's Mill Trail for a long trek. Trails are well-marked. A map is displayed at every trail junction with an arrow pointing to the parking lot. Schaeffer Farm is a joint project of the Maryland DNR and the Mid Atlantic Off Road Enthusiasts (MORE). The trail is populated primarily by bicycles. In the interest of courtesy and safety, hikers should be prepared to step off the trail at the approach of bikers. They can get going pretty fast down the hills. I recommend you get there early. The parking lot, although relatively large, can fill up quickly. Trailhead: MD Route 270 to exit 15B Rt.118 West - Follow for 5 miles - Right onto Richter Farm Road - Take left on 4-way stop on Shaeffer Road - Stay on Shaeffer Road through traffic circle - Shortly after road narrows look for sign to Seneca State Park on the left - Trailhead is at end of parking lot after gate. The entrance to the park is where the roads turns right. This is a well marked trail system, you can make the hike as long (short) as you want. A lot of little loops available. We went on a thursday morning hiked 3,5 hours and saw 8 mountainbikers. Very good signs along the trail and nothing too steep. A nice place for a hike. Best for walking on a weekday early. On weekends there are quite a few bikes, altho they are polite and there is usually room to stand to the side for them. There are nice views across the fields, and on the blue trail you can even see Sugarloaf mtn. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous. You are responsible for informing yourself about these hazards and taking necessary precautions. Information on this web site comes from volunteer reporters and may contain errors or omissions.
