Summary: The trail system is one of interlocking loops. There is a short trail around the canyon ponds and picnic area that links to two loops that form a second nature trail and a back country trail. The total is about 3 miles. The canyon ponds trail is less than a mile and the short nature trail is about a mile long. All three have elevation changes that might be too much for small kids, but others should enjoy it. The trail loops are marked well at the intersections. There are adirondack shelters along the trail that would entice someone interested in a secluded spot. The picnic trail is labeled as such. If desired, following nature trail #1 back to the trailhead will avoid the picnic crowds. Close to the beginning of the trail is a suspension bridge. Several other bridges cross a small stream as the trail meanders back and forth. The stream falls over a series of slate layers creating a very pleasant sound. Lots of wildlife. GREAT FOR FALL COLORS! Trailhead: Schramm Park is located on the Platte river 4 miles north of Louisville on highway 31. From Omaha or Lincoln its accessible from I-80 by taking the Gretna exit south (follow the signs). A pleasant drive from either direction. From the interstate, you will wind through pastures and hills till you enter the Platte valley at the park. From Louisville, you will drive along the northeast bank of the Platte. There is a park entrance fee for the park. There is an aquarium and nature center at the park. The park is an old fish hatchery. The building is now a museum and the pond are now home to geese, ducks and herons. It is pretty all the time, and truly beautiful during the early fall. The trail head is well marked ("Nature trail"). There is a large map of the trails at the trail head. Parking is available right next to the trailhead. We were almost at the end of the hike and just as the sun was setting so rescue crews had to help us down (helicopter and all). There is cell reception up there and all of the park, county, sheriff, fire and rescue personnel did a wonderful job and were so kind - thank you! We would definitely hike again but this time we'll wait until it's dried out a little and not icy/muddy. Beautiful park and great suspension bridge. I enjoyed this hike. This is a great hike for kids as there are several things to do before or after the hike. There is an aquarium and fishponds to show the kids some of the local inhabitants of the area's waters. The hike was relaxing and pretty. It crossed several small bridges that over looked small streams. I saw some wildlife and lots of different types of plants. Once again this hike was easy enough for kids and enjoyable enough for all ages. i would love to hike! The trails at schramm are well maintianed during the summer, when I'm there to work on them, but during the winter is my favorite time to be on them. The deer and turkey are thick as can be and if you are quiet you can see as many as you like. The overlook at the top of the bluff is awesome. During the winter this is an hilly hike but its fairly short, but during the winter it becomes slippery and can be a difficult climb. For extra information check at the Aksarben aquarium located .25 miles west of the trail head. Questions are welcome. -MB Nebraska game and Parks employee.
