Summary: It is a steep hike that is mostly in the shade, it is narrow but very well defined. The only thing that can fit on this trail is humans and dogs, it is tooo narrow for horses. It is a strenuous trail but to see Silver Lake is worth the sweat. You may be thinking that the lake would be refreshing to dive into, but it is a snow melt lake. We dipped our toes and decided to enjoy the breeze sitting on the shore. There is camping near Monte Cristo and also at Silver Lake. We biked into Monte Cristo and camped that night and in the morning continued onto Silver Lake, hiking and biking out that evening. If you wanted you could also continue onto Twin Lakes (2.4 miles further with a 343' elevation gain) Trailhead: Take Mountain Loop Highway thru Granite Falls to Barlow Pass. You will pass two very distinct bridges the first one is blue and the second is red. Also you will know that you are at Barlow Pass becuz the paved road ends. There is a parking lot on the left hand side or you can park along the road. You will need a parking pass available at the Mt Baker Snoqualmie National Forest ranger station that you pass as you enter the forest. ($7 for the day or $30 for the year) After completing the 4.19 trek (hike, bike, horse, or if fortunate to have a key drive) into Monte Cristo, continue on thru the town where you will see the signs for Silver and Twin Lakes. Reviewed by Con on 8/8/2005 I went up in the first week of August and the hike was great. Although it is only 3.26 miles if you are fortunate enough to have keys to the gate to drive to Monte Cristo.. if not then add about 8.36 miles to that hike. The trail is very rocky and pretty much up hill the entire way, also it is only maintained in spots, there are pleanty or areas that you have to walk up 3-8" break rock. Oh and the water is great this time of year. I was surprized to not see more hikers swimming; that is the first thing I did when I got there.
Reviewed by Viewer on 5/16/2004 Its still a little early in the season for this one. I lost the trail about 1.25 miles in due to heavy snow. Also, quite a few windfalls still. I definitly want to try this one again later this summer. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
