Summary: The only real climb on this hike is in the beginning. Switchback gently through the trees for 2 miles, then suddenly emerge from the trees to tremendous views of Shuksan, then Canadian Peaks, and Baker. My head kept swiveling for the entire ridge walk. Once you emerge from the trees, you can explore at leisure in the beautiful meadows. The flowers were incredible (I went in late July). Follow the trail to the right and wander the ridge. Look for tarns. Find a campspot. Go straight for the trail to Chowder Basin. Follow the trail for close to a mile, then when it goes right, follow the boot beaten path to the top of the knoll. Nice campspot, no water. This is 3 miles from the trailhead. If you prefer, continue on the Chowder Basin trail. You can scramble up the end of the ridge on your right and go through some trees to hit the ridge top trail. Or, stay on the main trail until it peters out near a small creek. Lots of Bang for the Buck!! Trailhead: Drive Highway 542 (Mt. Baker Highway) through the town of Glacier. One mile past the public service station, go right on Glacier Creek Road (39). Almost immediately, turn left on Dead Horse Road (37). Drive 4 miles, then start to climb. Climb for another 9 miles. Parking lot is at the end of the road on your right. Trailhead is across the road, just past the lot.
