Summary: This portion of the PCT makes for a good beginning to those who want to see high elevation lakes, long distance views of the Cascade mountain range, and try their hand at some elevation gain and loss. I would not call this a difficult hike but one more suited to evaluating your gear for an overnighter or a dayhike you can take on a whim in nice weather. Start northbound on the PCT for the first 2.5 miles and you will arrive at Sheep Lake. This could be a camping spot if not to crowded (usually is). Continuing on you gain 700 feet in the next half mile to the top of Sourdough Gap. As you near the top look over your left shoulder for a glimpse of Mt. Rainier's summit. I suggest taking the short trail over the ridge to see Crystal Lake with the mountain in the distance, before returning on the same trail to your car. Be cautious and stay on the trail as it gets heavily used and the meadows show signs of wear. Trailhead: Drive state route 410 to the summit of Chinook Pass, elevation 5432 ft. Continue 2 tenths of a mile to the parking lot on the left side of the road and you will see the trailhead sign. Follow the PCT northbound. I highly recommend this hike, including going far enough to see Crystal Lake and Mt Rainier. GREAT FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. This has become an annual summer event for the flowers , etc. Ages 2-68 and all had great time. A great sampling of Washintons high country. I try to hike this area at least once a year. Where else can you view Rainier, St Hellens and Adams and drive to sub alpine? Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
