Summary: Sterling forest is one of NY states newest state forest. It is over 20,000 acres and still growing. This particular hike I did today takes you through some cool/damp hemlock and beach tree valleys. The valleys have many streams and swamps. The most impressive of the Creeks is Jennings creek. It flows through the Jennings hollow were you can see cascades and its tea colored water from the acids the Hemlocks produce. Once out of the valleys you traverse the Sterling Ridge were you get views of the Wyanokies, Sterling Lake, Bearfort Ridge, Harriman State Park, and the surrounding Sterling Forest. The Ridge also has some real nice rock scrambles, especially the one just before the Sterling Fire Tower. The tower was closed today due to the weather but when open you get some awesome 360 degree views. Here are the trails to take: White,Lake to lake. Left onto Blue Sterling ridge. Left onto Orange, Left onto Green West Valley, Right onto Red tower to parking. Trailhead: From town of Warwick, take 17A east, towards Greenwood lake. When you come to town of Greenwood lake make a right ontoTen Eyck Rd. Follow this rd and eventually it turns to east shore drive. You will go along the east shore of Greenwood lake. Just before you get into NJ you will see a dirt lot on the left hand side. This is the start point. There will be signs once in parking lot. Some of the swamps had taken over the trail, but it was easy to skirt around. We didn't encounter many other hikers, but traffic (17a from Tuxedo) was terrible due to the Renaissance Faire.
