Summary: In 1913,Sarah Cochran, widow of coke and coal pioneer Philip Cochran, built a Tudor mansion, Linden Hall, north-west of Dawson and used the Mansion Road to travel between the two. The road has deteriorated and been blocked to vehicle traffic to become the Stone Bridge Trail.

The trail surface itself is broken asphault, concrete and gravel. It's not too bad for someone on foot but only mountain bikes could hande some of the steep grades and rough surface. Round trip is 2.5 miles and can be done in about an hour.

At about mid-way, there is an overlook that gives a nice view of the Youghiogheny River valley. I went about mid-October when the fall foliage was at it's hight.

Tours of Linden Hall are only available to groups of 25 or more.

Trailhead: Travel south on Route 51 from it's intersection with US Route 70. Turn left (west) at the light where there are signs for both Linden Hall and Perryopolis. Through Perryopolis, through the one-lane tunnel and bridge to Layton. A little less that 3 miles to a right turn at the sign for Linden Hall. Park in the lot across from the club house.

The entrance to the trail is about 0.3 mile further down from the parking. I was able to park near the trail entrance across from the maintenence shed but it was late in the day with few golfers about. During the season, one might no be able to get away with parking there.
