Summary: This high desert hike is a rough cross country hike that is well worth bushwacking for the amazing cliffside views and abundant wildlife. At the "trailhead" follow the ancient settlers road to the top of Kippel Point. From there make your way along the ridgeline and across several small canyons. About three miles along, cut behind a low butte and follow the canyon on the other side to Sheeplick Ridge. Hike to the tip of the ridge and pause for a view or photos. After that it's time to head back. There is no marked trail so feel free to make your own route, just make sure to bring a map and compass because the high desert can be disorienting once out of sight of the road. Bring lots of water and have a camera ready, I caught an eagle in flight as I came up to Kippel Point.
Trailhead: From Lakeview take 140e to the Paisley turnoff. Follow the Oregon Outback Scenic Byway to the town of Summer Lake. There are soothing hot springs at summer lake to ease the weary hiker. Drive 2.4 miles north of Summer Lake and take the turnoff signed Ana Reservior. 1.3 miles down the road park near a ODOT gravel pit and hike up to an old settelers road. From there the hike is all bushwacking. Ana Res has good primative camps and great fishing! Also for those who like seeking there is a hidden grotto with a beautiful stream near Ana Res.
