High Sierra Loop - Sunrise Camp to May Lake

Highlights:

Views of Half Dome, Teyana Lake, and lovely May Lake
Near:Yosemite National Park, CA
Scenery:
Distance:8 miles
Elevation Gain:1500 ft
Hike Time:5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Point to Point

Summary: The hike heads out west past the lovely Sunrise lake. At the first trail junction after the lakes, walk about 100 yards to the top of the rise for a spectacular view of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley. Next the trail drops down steeply into Tuolumne Meadows. We stopped at the lovely Teyana Lake for lunch, then crossed the highway and headed back uphill to May Lake High Sierra Camp.

We rose early to watch the sunrise over Lake May and Mount Hoffman, which was a real treat. We wish we had time actually climb Mount Hoffman, which I understand is an awesome day hike.

Trailhead: This hike is part of the High Sierra Loop, a series of 6 camps located between Tuolumne Meadows and Yosemite Valley. These camps have facilities for backpackers, but the best way to go is to stay in the tent cabins which includes great meals. Most of the camps can be reached via a day hike from either Yosemite Valley or Tuolumne Meadows.

This particular hike starts in the back country at Sunrise High Sierra Camp and ends at May Lake. Note that May Lake can be reached from a parking area that is only a few miles from the camp. (Lat:37.87584 Lon:-119.3353)
