Summary: This hike includes breathtaking views of Old Boney Mountain as you leave Satwiwa cultural center area and a pleasant hike down into the steep Sycamore Canyon. The waterfall at the hikes half way point is this highlight. The waterfall is almost 100 foot high and consists of a number of cascades that tumble over shear rock when water flow is high enough. This is a rather spectacular and secluded area. There is a big flat topped boulder that you can sit on to have lunch and watch the waterfall. Watch out for the poison oak near the waterfall as the area is covered with it! The path shown on topo forms a loop that goes down Boney trail, then doubles back through sycamore canyon to hook up with the main fire road for a return to the parking area. Trailhead: From Highway 101/Ventura Freeway in Newbury Park, exit on Wendy Drive. Drive 2.5 miles south to Lynn Road and turn right. Continue a mile or so, then just past Reino road turn left into Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa Park on the left side of the road. Absolutely beautiful, especially after the recent rains. Another hiker said the falls were the best they've been in 10 years. This time of year everything is green and flowers are blooming. Only drawback of course where there is water you find mosquitoes...don't forget the repellent! Nice hike. Yes, there are mountain lions and snakes in the mountains. That is their natural habitat and all they have left. If you are hiking or mountain biking you should always respect and expect this and know what to do in such a situation. got scared saw snakes and mountain lion.. he was looking at my husband and I within 25 feet, only a few car lengths away. Very very scared! good luck and keep your eyes open!! It was a really good hike sure i've been on it before because i'm still a kid and went thier for many field trips for school but me and my family took a different trail. Very cool i saw a good glimps of boney mountain and the waterfall had some water in it,but other than that it was awesome i would go agian! GOod hike if you start going down a hill with asphault your on the wrong trail :) Really pretty hike with a few upward climbs, but worth it. Almost made it to the waterfall however there was a k9- explorer who gave me a ticket for having a dog on a state park trail??? Careful and read the signs, obviously a trap for dogs. Will go again without the dog next time! its maybe a good hike, but the creeks are just too much to cross. we also ran into a fully grown rattlesnake I enjoyed leading a group of cub scouts down to Sycamore Falls and back. Although this hike has a cummulative 750 foot elevation gain, even our little tiger scouts made it without too much compaining. The misty fog added to the neat atmosphere in the deep dark grotto with the water trickling down the cascades. Great hike. The waterfalls are great but riding your bike down to the beach is the best!!!! Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
