Summary: Created when Henry Clay Frick's daughter asked for the park for her debutante party in 1908, Frick Park was built on the Victorian Era principal that people should be able to enjoy nature without all the unpleasantness of actually being in the wilderness. Thus, the main trails through the wooded ravine are 10 feet wide and butressed with stone walls to keep the trails even and without erosion. Fortunately, plans for fountains, gazebos and picnic pavillions were never fully realized and the bulk of the park remains as developed trails through undeveloped oak woods. In fact, the lower end of Frick Park where it meets Nine Mile Run is being restored to a more natural state with stream meanders and constructed wetlands. There is lots of activity on the trail year round. My review hike was done during a winter snow and there were literally a dozen dogs being walked by twice as many owners. Many of the side trails are, by special arrangement, open to mountain biking. Trailhead: There is on-street parking on Reynolds Steet across from the Frick Art and Historical Museum. There is a lot at the lower end of Fern Hollow at the end of Lancaster Ave. (N40 25.840 W79 54.037). There is a water fountain there but at the time of this review, it was not functioning. There are rest rooms and a water fountain at the picnic pavilion at the bottom of Falls Ravine Trail but the water wasn't flowing there either and the rest rooms were locked. There was a porta-john, though. As it was January, I'd have to go back when the weather improves to judge if these are temporary conditions. There is also parking off of Beechwood Blvd. just up from the intersection of Dallas and Forbes. Some trails are challanging and there is little foot traffic in some areas. While biking, I spend about five hours going from trail to trail. I literally find myself flying down mountains that I struggled to go up. Hats off to the entire frick park and all its trails. I love it. I love this park, mainly because it is in the city, and very easy to get to on a daily basis... There is a more detailed map listing all the named trails on the pittsburgh parks website... http://pittsburghparks.org.savvior.com/userdocs/frickmap.pdf There are many other named trails in the park. They range from easy to difficult. There are also many un-named trails. Some are Quite difficult. One trail that connects Fire Station Trail with Riverview Trail is near vertical & requires good leg & arm strength. You could easily spend an entire day hiking all of the trails in the park. Set aside a day to enjoy yourself while getting a good workout. Trail maps are available for the named trails. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous. You are responsible for informing yourself about these hazards and taking necessary precautions. Information on this web site comes from volunteer reporters and may contain errors or omissions.
