Summary: The North Shore section of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail system extends from the now abandoned Western Penitentiary and Brunot Island to Millvale. From there, it transforms into railline access road to as far as Shaler and the 62nd Street Bridge. While not part of the trail proper, this section is commonly used by bikers and pedestrians. The North Shore has places to see and visit, Heinz Field, PNC Park, the Carnegie Science Cente,Kayak Pittsburgh, Vietnam and Korean Veterans memorials and some nice views of Pittsburgh. There is a pedestrian bridge at the Ft. Duquesne bridge to take you across to Point State Park and from there to connect to other sections of the trail and points South. The trail itself varies in surface from concrete or asphault paving to coarse gravel. Watch for geese and goose poop along the Riverwalk. Trailhead: There are several places to access the trail along it's length. Because of the stadiums, most of that parking isn't free. For that, park off of Preble Ave in the West End (N40 27.780 W80 2.166), at the end of N. Franklin St. in Manchester (N40 27.276 W80 2.017) or at the Millvale Riverfront Park (N40 28.273 W79 58.366) which is off of Route 28 near the 40th Street Bridge. There is also Parking on Herr's Island (Washington's Crossing) at the old Three Rivers Rowing Association lot and some small lots on River Avenue. The section of the trail next to Herr's Island (Washington's Landing) belongs to CSX and is not technically part of the trail. The trail attempted to purchace this short section and the abandoned rail bridge at the North end of the island but CSX wanted so much for it that it will actually be cheaper for them to build a brand new bridge. In that case, the official trail will bypass that section by crossing over to Herr's Island and then back. That'll probably take a few years to complete.
