Hike Time:1 hours

HikeType:Point to Point

Summary: The Station Square section of the Three Rivers heritage Trail is by far the least suitable for bicycles in the whoe system so far. It takes you right through Bessimer Court at Station Square and if the weather is nice it will be literally packed with pedestrians. Even a jogger would have problems navigating the people loitering, enjoying the view or waiting for a table at any of the many restaurants.

The only things to recommend this piece of trail are the artifacts left over from the steel mills that used to dominate Pittsburgh, a nice view of the city at the western terminus of this trail and the hope that one day it will truly connect to the other trails. This is literally Mile Zero of the Great Allegheny Passage.

Take the Smithfield Street Bridge to connect to the Eliza Furnace Trail or ride the 4 or 5 blocks on back streets to get to the 9th St. terminus of the South Side Trail.

Trailhead: There are plenty of parking spaces available at Station Square itself but for those you will have to pay heaftily for. If you want to park for free, you'll need to go to the western end of the trail and park near the Duquesne Incline off of West Carson Street. There is a good view of the city from here and some architectural relics but no amenities.

All the amenities are located at the other end of the trail at Station Square proper but, while there are plenty of restaurants (Joe's Crab Shack being my favorite) there are no public drinking water fountains. (Lat:40.4403 Lon:-80.01709)

While there are no public water fountains outside, duck into Station Square for restrooms. There are vending machines with water inside Station Square and on the trail at the foot of the Smithfield Street bridge near the Grand Concourse. Note that the Smithfield Street bridge is open to pedestrians / bikes, which makes it the best link to the Point. The path continues a little bit down river past Station Square and ends behind the Sheraton. Going up river, you can continue all the way to just shy of the Glenwood Bridge (with well-marked detours onto local roads for one segment.) See Kevin's other excellent reviews for details.
