Summary: This is a short, but steep hike up a little used and under appreciated trail to a nice overlook. Because it isn't popular, it can be overgrown at times and poorly blazed (re-blazing is being planned). Catch the blue blazed Hewitt-Butler trail at the end of the metal guardrail. It descends to West Brook, where crossing can be difficult when the water is high. After crossing the brook it begins a gentle climb to a woods road. The trail turns onto the woods road which soon ends and the trail turns north and begins to climb the hill. First gently, then quite steeply. You'll start to see views through the trees to your right. The trail flattens out for a few minutes, then begins the final ascent to Manaticut Point, which involves some rock scrambles that shouldn't too difficult but may require all fours. Reaching the top there is an excellent view to the east marred somewhat by the scar of a quarry. Return the way you came, or continue on the HB trail for a longer hike. Trailhead: Route 287 to Wanaque exit. Take Wanaque Ave north, make left on WestBrook Rd. Continue on Westbrook Rd to Bloomingdale/West Milford border. There is parking for 3-4 cars on shoulder next to driveway for 711 Westbrook. Trailhead is accross the street at the end of the guardrail (Lat:41.08569 Lon:-74.33314) Trail Guides for Manaticut Point-Norvin Green SF: New Jersey Walk Book by NY/NJ Trail Conference (NY/NJ Trail Conference) Best Seasons: Fall, Spring, Summer, User Groups: Hikers, Dogs, Ranger Contact: Ringwood SP: 973-962-7031 Localhikes Reporter: This hike was submitted by Brian Sniatkowski, who has posted 37 other hikes on this site Trail Reviews Submit your own review Definitely wait for low water levels before attempting to cross West Brook. Since the publishing of the West Milford 13er's Baker's Dozen Challenge book, this trail is much better marked and it's getting more foot traffic. The hike to Manaticut Point and on to West Brook Mountain is one of the required peaks of the West Milford Baker's Dozen Challenge (www.weishike.com) - it is short, steep and offers a unique view of the Manhattan skyline, the helipad on Saddle Mountain and the quarry that cut off the Hewitt Butler Trail.
