Summary: Once again another rainy day. Although I beat the heavy rain this time. This loop hike is awesome. The loop is entirely within the Bearfort Mt Natural Area. It starts out by going up a gradual climb to Terrace Pond, a secluded lake on top of Bearfort Mt. There are some cool cliffs around the lake. Along the rout you pass some neat rock formations and glacial erratics. There are also some great rock scrambles, although today they were very difficult with the rain. There area has some great forest consisting of Hemlocks, Beach trees, Stripped Maples, Tamarack trees, Mt Laurel, Yellow and Gray Birch, and Rhododendrons. I also discovered some waterfalls off the Terrace Pond South trail. You have to follow outlet of swamp and the Falls are there. Here are the trails to take: Blue Terrace Pond North, to White Terrace Pond, to Yellow Terrace Pond South. Be careful because there are many trail in the area with similar blaze colors. Trailhead: From Wayne NJ take rt. 23 North into West Milford. Make a right onto Clinton Rd. Be careful Clinton Rd is suppose to be haunted. Follow Clinton Rd past Clinton Reservoir. Trail head is on left on Clinton Rd. Just before pipe Line. If you go to Warwick Turnpike you went to far. Great family hike. We started on the yellow to red to white (lake) and finished on blue. When you come out of the trail on blue to head back down to Clinton Road, make a left (not a right, like we did) to head down the pipeline to your car. Does anyone know anything about the boy who drowned here in August of this year? So how high is the cliff there? I'm trying to find some nice high rocks to jump off of. (Safely of course!) I love this hike because it is cool and covered. There is terrain variety and lots to see. You have the woodsy areas and the rock scrambles. I like the little cliffs, streams (waterfalls), swamp, lake, treetop views. I have seen chipmunks, squirrels and a turtle. We started on the yellow trail and then took the yellow dot trail and finally the white bringing us to the lake towards the end (3 hrs). My little dog was able to manage this hike. Many people know this spot and I have heard that it can get quite busy in summer, though swimming is not allowed. It's getting busier here and littered with empty bottles (broken glass) and other human junk near the lake. The red trail is full of rock scrambles. Really great hike. The elevation changes were challenging but not brutal. The scenery was amazing. Terrace Pond looks like it will be a great swimming spot in the summer and made for a nice rest spot on the hike. Make sure you bring some insect repelant since the yellow trail down runs through the wetlands. Other trails are off of Clinton Road before this trail, but they indicate that a permit is required to enter. This signage was not posted near this hike's parking lot and trail. The directions indicate that the trail is on the left of Clinton Road. If you are coming from Route 23N and turn onto Clinton Road the parking lot is about a mile past the reservoir on the left and the trail is across the street on the right with signs. besthike ever good training since im goin into the army would definetly recomend it to others...the hadest part is the pipeline hill u jus need to build up a constant speed and ur set the pond is clean and refreshing bring water and some food ull need it Overall a very enjoyable hike. Great swimming! The water was clean and warm. Cliff jumping was AWESOME!! Lots of people enjoying a Labor Day hike and swim. Took the Yellow to Yellow dot to White to Terrace Pond. The trail was well marked and not very difficult at all. Took the Blue to the parking lot. Again, it was well marked and had some nice rock formations. The only problem I had was there was a lot of garbage around the pond. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
