Summary: Once again another rainy day. Although I beat the heavy rain this time. This loop hike is awesome. The loop is entirely within the Bearfort Mt Natural Area. It starts out by going up a gradual climb to Terrace Pond, a secluded lake on top of Bearfort Mt. There are some cool cliffs around the lake. Along the rout you pass some neat rock formations and glacial erratics. There are also some great rock scrambles, although today they were very difficult with the rain. There area has some great forest consisting of Hemlocks, Beach trees, Stripped Maples, Tamarack trees, Mt Laurel, Yellow and Gray Birch, and Rhododendrons. I also discovered some waterfalls off the Terrace Pond South trail. You have to follow outlet of swamp and the Falls are there. Here are the trails to take: Blue Terrace Pond North, to White Terrace Pond, to Yellow Terrace Pond South. Be careful because there are many trail in the area with similar blaze colors. Trailhead: From Wayne NJ take rt. 23 North into West Milford. Make a right onto Clinton Rd. Be careful Clinton Rd is suppose to be haunted. Follow Clinton Rd past Clinton Reservoir. Trail head is on left on Clinton Rd. Just before pipe Line. If you go to Warwick Turnpike you went to far. Great swimming! The water was clean and warm. Cliff jumping was AWESOME!! Lots of people enjoying a Labor Day hike and swim. Took the Yellow to Yellow dot to White to Terrace Pond. The trail was well marked and not very difficult at all. Took the Blue to the parking lot. Again, it was well marked and had some nice rock formations. The only problem I had was there was a lot of garbage around the pond. Awesome hike, comparable to A S Hewitt Loop. From lower parking lot, the trail head is marked blue/yellow and splits right after entry. I did yellow to yellow dot to red to white to blue. Total hike time was about 2.5 hours. Red trail has very challenging rock scrambles. The pond was breathtaking and the swimming was amazing! There is even a cliff jump into the pond which a few young kids were doing. Caution, If you take the hike in this direction, the yellow trail cuts back sharply about 1.5 miles in. I missed it at first. If you end up a T intersection, you went too far and will need to backtrack about an eighth of a mile. Great place to get away and do some real hiking. I love to bring my dog and he loves it. Great place for a working dog to really show his stuff. I can't wait to go back!! This is a great place to hike! I love to bring my dog and he loves it!!! No other place like it in NJ. Beautiful Pond, great scenery. Be careful, there are two parking lots. One by the Yellow Trail (I guess...didn't see the trail head marking when I stopped) and a second lot (coming from Rt 23) that leads to the Blue Trail. The trail heads were not well marked. If you go by the Pipe line trail (2nd lot), enter the blue trail near the top of the first hill. Blue markings and an arrow are on the rocks. Keep your eyes open, the blue trail quickly bends to the left, while a wide open loop back to the pipeline bears to the right and back out. We were not paying attention and had to go back for a second look... A bit frustrating. Once we were on the blue trail, all was right with the world again and we enjoyed this hike. Just completed this hike, or at least a similar one, in under 2 hours. I chose to follow the pipeline and enter along the blue trails near the top of first hill. Followed blue to white to red to yellow. Also came across a yellow dot trail which seems to run between yellow and white. Swamp, waterfall, bouldering, lake, views and even a bear siting. A must do for northern New Jersey A gorgeous trail I've hiked twice. It was fun, and extremely rewarding once you make it to the top. Towards the end there is a BEAUTIFUL story-book-esque section of forest with vivid moss , the trickling sound of a small creek, and tall trees that let in just enough sun to reveal beaming rays of light. I've done this one a number of times... it never gets old. I would suggest bringing 2 or 3 bottles of water - I'm always grateful that I have them. I'm not much of a hiker, but I love the pond so much I'm willing to do it over and over. There are also blueberries and huckleberries at the top. We ran into a 60-some-odd guy picking berries for his wife to bake with one time. :-) Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
