The Keyhole and Agnes Vaille Shelter

>

Highlights:

A good hike on Longs Peak for those not interested in the technical terrain
Near:Estes Park, CO
Scenery:
Distance:12.75 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:3880 ft
Hike Time:7.5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: The trail is well labeled and easy to find due to the traffic it receives. Follow the Longs Peak trail. There are many signs that will help you stay on the correct path. There are restrooms available at the trailhead, at 11,000 feet, and in the boulder field on this hike. A nice change over a lot of other back country hikes. This route will not exceed class two hiking. The most difficult part is doing the boulder field, however if you take your time most people can navigate it without trouble. The keyhole is an obvious rock formation seen in the photos I have listed with this hike. The view from it is dramatic. Also take the time to read the plaque on the rock shelter built there.
Trailhead: Head South from Estes Park on Highway 7 for 9.2 miles. Turn right onto Longs Peak Road. This road ends at the Longs Peak Trailhead. If you don't get here early though, you may have to park a long ways away. The park fee is $20 for 3 day access or $35 for an annual pass as of 2005. (Lat:40.2722 Lon:-105.5565)
