Summary: The road noise fades away as you enter the narrow slot canyon (30" wide in places), which is always cool and shady with the towering cliffs above. Leaving the slots, there is one solitary utility line strung overhead, then you're all alone except for the critters who live in this canyon. Open range for many years, the canyon is now littered with rusted barrels, buckets, old car parts and other debris left by humans -- partially buried in the sand and gravel washbed. The walls of slot canyon are now marred with graffiti and charred by many careless & illegal campfires. The illegal off-roaders & plinkers have discovered this canyon-- now motorcycle & bicycle tracks are mixed with hoof prints. During the week, it's still isolated and quiet -- a perfect way to enjoy the lush canyon filled with junipers, pinions, Joshua trees, wildflowers and blooming shrubs (April - June). Popular trail for horse riders who make it a longer loop. Keep your stirrups in at the slot! Trailhead: From the strip or downtown Las Vegas, take I-15 N past the spaghetti bowl (95/I-15/515 junction) to 95 N toward Reno. Turn L (W) on SR 157 (Mt. Charleston - Kyle Canyon Rd.) about 12 miles to the turn at the sign which reads "Harris Springs". Note that this turn is past the paved unsigned turn for Harris Springs and is past the horseback concessionaire. Turn L (S) on the unpaved, signed gravel road, but do not drive up the hill towards Harris Springs. If you have a narrow wheelbase, high clearance 4WD (jeep wrangler is perfect) you can drive on the poorly maintained gravel path to the base of the Slots -- take E/W gravel path. Otherwise, park where you turned off and hike in from here. If you miss the turn & make it all the way to the Mt. Charleston Hotel, you'll need to go back and look for the Harris Springs sign at the curves. Kyle Canyon Rd is 55 mph here & gets very busy on weekends - be careful!
