Summary: This is a 3.5 mile out-and-back hike along a well-maintained trail at Big Bend Natl Park. The trail follows a natural drainage through a bowl eroded into volcanic mountains (The Basin). To hike from the trailhead to The Window the hiker descends about 800 feet, so on the return it will be necessary to climb the 800 feet. The trail starts in an arid upland desert environment and ends up at a densely vegetated, moist drainage. Black bears and mountain lions occur in the park, so it's not recommended to hike there solo or at night. Cautious hikers might want to carry bear pepper spray. At the end of the trail, the drainage narrows to a sliprock canyon just a few feet wide. At the end of the canyon, a drop-off creates a waterfall on those rare occasions with rain. Below the pouroff the Chihuahuan Desert, and, at night, the lights of Terlingua, Texas can been seen. Trailhead: The Window Trail has trailheads at the large Chisos Mountains Trails sign behind the Casa Grande Lodge (farthest from the Window), at the Basin campground, and at the Basin group campground (closest to the Window).
