Highlights:

The Timp, Timp Pass Road, Hebert Mine
Near:Stony Point, NY
Scenery:
Distance:5.6 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1800 ft
Hike Time:3.5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Loop

Summary: I followed the historic 1777 trail along an old woods road that ran along the park boundary. The trail became steep and made a U-turn and met the blue Timp-Torne Trail. I followed the TT as it snaked through an area of huge boulders. A few times, I scrambled to the top of a boulder to enjoy the view. I reached the top of the Timp and took in 360 degree views. The Hudson ran to the south and north, and I could see Bear Mtn, Anthony's Nose and the Bear Mtn Bridge. To the west stood West Mtn and I could clearly see the West Mtn Shelter. The Timp Pass ran between the two peaks. I enjoyed the solitude for an hr and then continued along the TT down into Timp Pass. There I found the old Timp Pass Rd and followed it north. I took a quick excursion to the nearby Herbert Mine then continued along back to the 1777 trail. I caught the trail at the remains of an old youth camp. Here the 1777 trail led over the back to it's junction with the TT and finally to Rt 202 & 9W.
Trailhead: There are three hiker parking areas available on Rt 9W & 202. I parked at the southern most turnoff, next to a junkyard on the left. All parking at Harriman is at your own risk, but at this lot, I think any would be thieves think your car is part of the junkyard. (I've never had any problems)The trail is 100 feet north & across the road. (Lat:41.26525 Lon:-73.97766)

My Timp hike starts at the Anthony Wayne lot off of the Palisades Parkway. Many ways up from here. Here's one way: Start at the North end of the lot and find the Fawn Trail (white balze with a red "F" in the middle. Take this for 1/4 mile until you see the blue blazes of the Timp-Torne Trail. You'll follow this trail until you hit the Timp. To complete your loop, follow the Timp-Torne east down the hill a short bit. You'll see the red blazes of the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail on your right. Take this for a good while-it will take you down West Mountain. Eventually, you'll hit a fire road (Beechy Bottom Road East) which you'll follow for about a mile to the northern end of the Anthony Wayne lot. This is about a 7-mile hike. Get a map

We did this hike in June and modified it to make it longer. We started further up at a lot near an anchor statue. Took a short red blazed trail that met the blue trail and hiked to the top of the Timp. Views were awesome. To the north is beautiful mountains and natural scenery. To the south is mountains and the NYC skyline. Very nice! We followed the blue trail down but turned left at the bottom to another trail that took us down to the valley floor and up a very steep climb and back to the blue trail. On the way back we saw a North American Diamondback Rattler. He didn't want to move, so we walked around him. Very nice area. Get the NJ/NY Trail Conference maps and customize this hike.
