Trail Canyon Overlook

Highlights:

Seldom used deer path leads beyond Cathedral Rock for nice view of Trail Canyon
Near:Las Vegas, NV
Scenery:
Distance:5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1565 ft
Hike Time:3.5 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:Poorly maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This is a nice workout with a steady climb and mostly tree lined the entire way. You'll follow the same trail as for Cathedral Rock, but will continue on the main trail straight instead of turning R for the path to the top of Cathedral Rock. I will give you the bearings for a couple of points along this path, but I HIGHLY suggest you use Branch Whitney's guidebook (purchase CD or individual hike on his website, Hiking Las Vegas) if you want to actually find this overlook instead of wandering the many game paths which cover this mountainside (which is still not a bad way to spend the day)! When you reach the end of the main trail (past Cathedral Rock turnoff), look for the culvert with a cast iron lid (36.25422, 115.65699 elev. 8510) -- be sure and stay to the R as you cross the first gravel drainage (you're now just above Little Falls). Overlook is at 36.26024, 115.66049, elev. 8790. Try to stay on the deer path even though it is steep and slippery (pine needles).
Trailhead: I-15 N from Las Vegas to 95 N towards Reno, W on SR 157 (Mt. Charleston - Kyle Canyon) continue past the hotel, past the USFS ranger station, past Echo Road and continue past the hairpin curve to the left. Shortly past the hairpin curve, look for the Echo parking area (stairs and restroom bldg) on the right side of the road. This is a free parking area and if you park here, go up the steps and take the trail to the Left. This is a steep 1/4 mile path that meets and joins the main rock-lined path leading from the Cathedral Rocks picnic area. If you don't mind paying the fee to park, continue past this parking area into the Cathedral Rocks picnic area, park and begin the trail from here. If you do park inside the picnic area ($6), you'll need to return to your vehicle before the park closes for the evening. Parking inside the picnic area actually adds 1/2 mile to this hike distance, but is not as steep as the shorter route from the Echo parking area. (Lat:36.25771 Lon:-115.64932)
