Summary: This is pleasant hike takes you to one of five remaining fire towers in the Catskills. The trail is marked with red disks and follows old wood roads for the most part. There are several switchbacks as the road winds its way up the mountain. Long gradual sections alternate with short steady climbs, but you will not find anything terribly steep. You pass an old bluestone quarry (a big rock pile) and a lean-to (three-sided shelter) with a privy on the way up. Near the summit is a second lean-to. You can climb the fire tower at the top of Mount Tremper for views of the surrounding mountains. Overlook mountain is due east. Trailhead: From Woodstock, take NY Rte 212 west to for 11 miles to Mount Tremper. Turn right onto Old State Rte 28 (County Rte 40). The trailhead parking is 2.3 miles and on the right side. No pencil in the register box. NYS Patrol busted my nuts for expired vehicle inspection but issued no ticket. An empty Mike's Hard Lemonade bottle on side of trail (you asshole whoever you are). Surprised to find someone left behind dry matches and small firewood / dry paper. Maybe 5 people total on trail all beautiful day !!! Through away your iPads and burn some fat and do this hike. It's a good strenuous starter trail. Very easy but don't bring along any complainers. I'm 45, outta shape, smoker, and have no other hiking experience. Made it to summit in 3 hours, down about 1.5. No walking stick. The spring was flowing with NICE COLD WATER an awesome treat since it was Took us about 4 hours, straight up and back round trip. I would definately rate this moderate-strenuous. There are many rocks going up and coming back do bring a walking stick and good hiking boots. We are a little out of shape so I have blisters on my feet and sore muscles 2 days later, but overall it was an OK hike. Some rocks and caves on the way. Not much to see at the top, so you must climb the fire tower if you want to take pictures or see any views. No views until the top. The spring was pretty much running only slightly, due to lack of any rainfall. My 8 year old Springer is exhausted too! Probably would not do again because of the many small rocks and no rewarding views on the way up. HIked the trail on June 26, 2010. It is listed as "moderate" in terms of difficulty but for two out of shape day trippers there was a fair amount of huffing and puffing. Definitely still feeling it three days after. Well worth the effort. Beautiful trail, well marked. When you get to the first lean-to, you have another half hour or so to go to the top, where you will find the second lean-to and the fire tower. A great view from there for sure. An especially nice day for us because he proposed to me while we were resting in the lean-to at the summit. I said yes! Working on the Catskill Fire Tower Tour. This is one of five in the catskills. Hiked on 10/26/09, great fall day, trail was in great condition, some wet areas on the trail. The view from the summit tower is well worth the three mile journey to the top. Strenuous for a couple of flatlanders, we were hurtin the next day. A bear crossed our path at about the halfway point. A lot of the trail was under water due to heavy spring rains. Great views at the top. Nice Trail! Unfortunatly the fire tower was closed, which is your only chance for a view. Nonetheless a great time. Wear good hiking boots that support your ankles. No view from the top, as the fire tower was closed for construction. According to the ranger I ran into on the hike the tower will be opened again by September. I like the hike and with no camping gear I would rate it moderately difficult. With gear it can be strenuous. No vistas, but the scenary in the woods was interesting with caves and the one dark pine forest. Bring a walking stick. It'll help brace yourself on the way up and balance yourself on the way down. Lots of loose rocks to roll an ankle on. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
