Summary: This is one of my favorite trails. It follows an old mail route used over 90 years ago. The trail is uphill for the first half mile, but after that it is fairly easy terrain. The trail starts out as gravel but soon turns to a dirt path with tree roots providing traction. The views offered are spectacular. This first part of the trail takes you from the Chugach State Park Headquarters to lovely McHugh Creek, a very popular picnic area. Wildlife and nature views are all around you with interpetive signs and benches along the way in case you need a break. Be sure and take a camera on this one!

Trailhead: Trailhead is located just south of Anchorage. Across the highway from the Chugach State Park headquarters. Take the Seward highway south out of Anchorage. Just after the Potter Marsh you will see the Chugach State Park Headquarters on the right side of the road and the trailhead parking on the left. (Lat:61.04857 Lon:-149.79142)

I hike this trail many times each year primarily because of its ease of access and its awesome views. You can go as far as you want (up to 9.5 miles) but plan for it. Some portions beyond the McHugh Creek area are steep and rocky and may be hazardous to the unitiated hiker. Occasional black bears and grizzly bears seen along the trail. May see moose and Dall sheep also! But the views of Turnagain Arm and the kenai Peninsula are the best.
