Summary: This hike has two things that make it one of my favorites: (1) it's near-wilderness, marred only by distant sound from the PA Turnpike the last few miles of the hike, and (2) it is fairly quick and easy to access by car. The trail follows the rocky ridgeline of Rising Mountain and then Knob Mountain. This is relatively level until a very steep descent at the end of Knob Mountain to the trail section end. This grade makes a north to south hike advisable. Cautions: bring sufficient water, as there is none available along the hike. Avoid hike in wet conditions as rocks and end descent can be dangerously slippery. Keep an eye peeled for rattlesnakes sunning themselves on rocks--I saw only a ribbon snake on this hike but have seen rattlers on nearby sections of the Tuscarora Trail in summer months. Emergency exit via Catholic Path (goes through private property; see map) to Doylesburg--no other means to reach road except trail beginning and end. Trailhead: From Doylesburg, PA proceed north on SR75 approx 1 mile. Bear right (NE) on SR274 4.8 mi. Turn right on Hemlock Road (this is just south of Big Spring State Park). Proceed 4.5 mile up Hemlock Road to trailhead at upper end of Hemlocks Natural Area. NOTE: Hemlock Road is a desgnated snowmobile trail and is closed to vehicle traffic from mid-December to the end of March. South end of trail is at SR 641 0.8 miles south of village of Spring Run, PA. Parking is available approx. .15 mi south of trailhead on SR 641 at a roadside shale pit.
