Summary: This hike take you into one of the loveliest sections of the San Gabriel mountains. The hike meanders back and forth across the stream running down the spectacular Arroyo Seco Canyon. The stream is lined with oaks and alder, with the water cascading over granite into mirror-like pools. The hike travels high above the 50 foot high Switzer falls, where the trail bears right to head towards Oakwilde Camp.

The trail traverses the hillside high above the Arroyo Seco, then drops down into the densely wooded Long Canyon. At the junction of Long Canyon and the Arroyo Seco, a lovely two tier 50 foot waterfall drops down into a gleaming pool. The section of this trail between Long Canyon and the Oakwilde camp is considered to be the most gorgeous of the entire Arroyo Seco, with its souring walls, cascades, and dense woodland.

Trailhead: From Interstate 210 in La Canada, take Highway 2 north and drive 10 miles to Switzer picnic area on the right. Descend to the parking area outside the campground. You will see a footbridge over the stream leading to the trail head. (Lat:34.26609 Lon:-118.14559)

Walked Switzer picnic area to Switzer Falls & a mile or so down Bear Canyon this afternoon, with my 10 year old and one of his friends, plus my two 7 years olds & one of their friends. Kids love this hike, but watch them carefully on the ridge coming down into Bear Canyon below the falls.

This is one of my favorite hikes. There was barely a trickle of water at the Switzer picnic area, tapering off to a mostly dry streambed. Nevertheless, the hike was lovely with deep, dark, heavily wood canyons, breathtaking views, and wonderful narrow channels where the water has carved the rock. I didnt see another sole today on the trail. Try this trail a few days after rain in the winter, it is really breathtaking.

Hiked this hike today, and added in the detour to the lower Switzer Falls, and down Bear Canyon to the campground and back before heading down to Oakwilde. This added an additional 4 miles to the hike. I would say this hike is a strenous hike. The books and this site seem to down play the steepness of the trail in both directions. It was a beautiful day, and I think Bear Canyon is one of the most beautiful canyons in the San Gabriels.

Did the "Big Hike" today. From Switzer all the way to the Pasadena/JPL area. WHen all was said and done, we went about 11 miles, and it was awesome. Perfect weather, and great people to hike with. My feet hurt right now, but it was worth it!!!!!

This if definately one of my favorite hikes, despite the popularity. Normally I look for a little solitude on an excursion. However, once past Switzer Falls the trail really thins out! The first part of the hike does involve many stream crossings and in the spring, or after heavy rainfall, they can be difficult to cross without getting wet. We hiked this over the weekend with my two month old in the snuggly and it was excellent! I managed to stay dry the entire time.

It's a nice hike, but doesn't worth 5 star. several reasons this is not a perfect hike: 1, a big portion of this hike's so narrow, and tons of poky spiky plants sticking you all the way across. 2,not all shaded. today was ok, nice weather. but if a sizzling sunny day, must be harsh. but overall, it's a very nice trail. good view, mostly shaded path, so quient in the mountain. will go again

Knats and mosquiitos in your eyes all the way to Oakwilde Camp!Husband stug twice by the same hornet. One the way out, I was stung 8 times by bees (MY WORST NIGHTMARE)Hurt like crazy! LOTS of poison ivy!! Washed with poison oak stuff when I got home. The stupid bee stings still hurt and it is now 6pm!!WWWWAAAAA!!!!Not a happy hiker!

Great hike! Lot's of people, and some unforunate tagging along the rock formations, but overall I would recommend.
