Summary: The Arizona Canal is one of the many canals used to supply the valley with its water needs (irrigation). These canals were originally build by the indigenous Indians centuries ago. The city of Phoenix, in partnership with Salt River Project, and local businesses, have developed the Arizona Canal for all types of recreational purposes (bike, jog, walk, equestrian, etc), except motorized vehicles. The Arizona Canal extends from the Pima Indian Reservation on the East, to Glendale/Peoria on the West. Use of the trail can be accessed at almost any point along the way; but I like to start at Metro Center and travel East into Scottsdale. Recently, the area of the canal that passes through Sunnyslope, has been constructed with the recreational user in mind. Underpasses were build to avoid crossing intersections, architecture was introduced for the peaceable moments of rest and contemplation. The Canal is secluded enough to keep the noise of the city away. Trailhead: Park at the Metrocenter Transit facility (park & ride lot-free & secured parking); located on the south side of the mall (29th drive and Metro Parkway). Walk/bike/jog to the unofficial trail head (south on 29th drive to canal). The canal heads both east and west at this point. The trail is between the two canals. This is the trail that has the improvements and underpasses. Reviewed by ROB on 2/6/2007 This trail is a great thoroughfare from central Phoenix, or further east, to the Peoria Sports Complex for spring training games. I've rode my bike many times to games and March is a great time to ride. Also from the west, you can go east almost as far a Scottsdale Stadium for a Giants game. Some street riding is required for this one. Well worth the trip. 
Reviewed by PyrtHkr on 6/23/2006 Mostly ride my hybrid bike along this route although I've joined the armada of joggers between 44th & 64th Sts on occasion. Pretty neat that one can go essentially across town w/o crossing more than a few sts & the City seems to be constantly improving +/or adding amenities.
Reviewed by Jordan on 10/7/2004 >>>> i have hiked various segments of the az canalrecreational trail over the past 5 years from goldwater blvd. west to central ave. very intresting perspective of various phx. neighborhoods at the more leasurely walking pace of 4-5 mph. and hope to make the central ave. to metrocenter section in the next few years weather permitting as i prefer the valleys colder/brisker days during the Dec-Feb. period on days when temperatures are below normal in full sun !!!! >>>overall my favorite sections are between 44th st.to 32nd st., 12th st. to northern ave,and 64th st. to 44th st.,stopping off at the az falls park near 56th & indian school rd. >>>hope this gives you some idea re: future urban hikes along the az canal path/trail.
