Summary: This hike won't take you into the wilderness, but it can provide an hour of pleasant walking in a lovely setting. In 1900 the town of Venice, California was founded with a 20 mile network of canals and waterfront homes. Today, all that is left is a few miles of waterway near the infamous Venice boardwalk. The setting is pastoral, with lovely cottages facing the water, landscaped walkways, ducks and row boats meandering about. There are 14 small bridges that span the rectangular canal area, giving you the flexibility to hike as much or as little as you like. For those able to handle crowds and pushy street vendors, the boardwalk is just a few blocks away.
Trailhead: The Venice Canals are located near the Pacific Coast between Washington Avenue and Venice Boulevard, just two blocks east of Pacific Avenue. I would suggest parking Ocean Street or Dell, which both run parallel to the beach. (Lat:33.98567 Lon:-118.46425)

My partner and I loved our twilight stroll through the canals. It was like nothing we had experienced before in Los Angeles. We went around Halloween and some homeowners had fantastic decorations.

These canals were one of the most beautiful and unexpected finds in LA- I would highly, highly recommend this trip.

i walked just a bit through the canals off dell street....night, lights, quietly floating ducks, cicadas and quite sure i heard a frog or two. i thought it was magical. some of the homes looked like the ultimate in cozy, sweet cottage dwellings. roses, jasmine, tibetan prayer flags and tiny lights, oh my. i was sad to have found them on my last night in the area....when i return, i will visit them more completely and during early evening around sunset.

Nice walk along canals and over foot bridges...you'll see ducks, little boats parked in front of nice houses along a network of intersecting canals. Then you can walk along the nearby Venice boardwalk... would take visitors to LA here as an interesting experience

A Nice walk to bring a date or your wife! I agree that it does NOT smell. However, if you walk to the other side of the road of where the trail starts, this part does smell horribly! Stay far away from the opposite side of the street. Also, walk 2 blocks towards the ocean and you will find a nice pier. Continue on the venice boardwalk and across from the basketball courts you can purchase $.99 slice of pizza which is large, thin and delicious! Don't be swayed by the pizza joints that offer $1.99 per slice. This makes an enjoyable half a day of entertainment.

I live around the corner from the canals and I can asure you it does NOT "smell pretty bad". On a rear hot summer day when the canals happened to be in the draining mode it may have a fishy odor, but 99% it doesn't smell as Ahley suggested. On the contrary, the abundance of jasmin makes it a nice walk (hiking is to strong a word), day or night.

Its neat to see but not a hike, just a walk and it smells pretty bad, sorry if you live there but it does!
