Summary: This route descends the plateau, crossing numerous creeks and goes next to many beautiful waterfalls. There are a few caves here (Sheep Cave, Big Laurel Falls Cave, VF Cave) that are worth visiting if you have time. Also, the overlook (Martha's Pretty Point) is well worth the deviation. It is listed as the Caney Fork Overlook Trail. Please note that the pictures in this description are taken from various websites and are not my own work (my digicam died). This hike took me nearly 8.5 hrs at a leisurely pace including visiting Sheep Cave.
Trailhead: On Scott Gulf Rd, off of Eastland Rd. Between Sparta and Crossville (Lat:35.85414 Lon:-85.28263)

LOVE THIS HIKE! Me and my wife hiked this over the Memorial Day weekend, hiking to the falls on Sunday and back on Monday. This was my third trip to Virgin Falls, her first. Big Branch, Big Laurel and the Sheep Cave were a little dry this trip but Virgin Falls were fantastic. The trail was freshly marked, some of the paint was still wet. I suggest making it an overnight hike allowing yourself time for the side trip to Martha's, to explore the Sheep Cave, the cave above Virgin Falls and to spend time at Caney Fork swinging off the rope swing. The only downside this trip was the very loud, rude and inconsiderate campers beside us. Whether a day hike or overnighter, this trail is well worth it!!!

We did this hike on 5/19/11 and we had a great time. Weather and scenery was beautiful. Saw Pileated woodpeckers and almost had an encounter with a skunk. The beginning part of the trail is marked well and easy to follow but on the return from Virgin Falls we had a little difficulty locating markers. When you approach the Virgin Falls area you will see a split and written in orange on a tree at the fork to the left is the word "Short". This will lead you to another split at the bottom. To the left will be Caney Fork River and to the right will be the Virgin Falls. Virgin Falls is not marked here. Make sure to take the trail to the head of the falls it will be well worth the journey. There are some downed trees that cross the trail.

JUST HIKED VIRGIN FALLS ON FRIDAY. THIS WAS MY FIRST TRIP OUT THIS YEAR. THE FALLS WERE PLENTY AND BEAUTIFUL. I FOUND THE TRAIL TO BE STRENUOUS BUT GREAT. I HOPE THAT I HAVE THE CHANCE TO HIKE THE TRAIL AGAIN.

We made the hike today and it was beautiful. There was plenty of water in the streams and all of the falls were running well. Virgin Falls was thundering beautifuly. The only downside was my lack of planning that resulted in our not taking enough food and water. Take plenty of water, energy snacks and a lunch. You'll need it.

One of the prettiest & most interesting hikes I've done in this area and one that I look forward to doing again. I found the trail well-maintained and easy to follow. I took us about 4 hrs & 45 minutes there and back including taking a bunch of pics and eating lunch along the way. Do not forget your camera on this one!

I just hiked to Virgin Falls yesterday and it was the first hike I've ever really been on. It was absolutely beautiful. I took many amazing pictures and just had a great time. When we got to the top of Virgin Falls we sat down next to the cave where the water comes out and ate lunch. We hiked from 10am to 4pm. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes the outdoors and is an active person.

This is a very beautiful hike. It is a hard hike to do if you don't hike often. The trail isn't marked as well as some others in the area so be careful and pay attention to details. Will do it again and recommend it to others.

Finally we got our hike to Virgin Falls last Saturday. It is fantastic. 830am to 600pm. Had the Falls almost to ourselves but passed over 100 hikers coming in for a overnight stay as we hiked out. This is not an easy hike if you are in just average condition. It can be grueling coming back so allow extra time. Well worth it!
