Summary: We suggest you start your Wapack Trail (yellow triangle blazes) from the north trailhead in the Old Mountain Rd Trailhead. From there you can steeply ascend to North Pack Monadnock Mt where you get spectacular views of north, and western New Hampshire. After enjoying the views, descend through the Wapack Trail, and then quickly ascend again into the Pack Monadnock Mountain. There you will find an observation tower that will allow nice views of Massachusetts and New Hampshire on sunny days. Mt. Monadnock can be seen on the distance. Continue on the Wapack trail south through a very rocky descent that will bring you to a couple of viewpoints, and finally to the Miller State Park parking lot where your car should be awaiting. If you only have one car, you can start the hike in the Miller State Park, climb Pack and North Pack Monadnock Mts. through the Wapack trail, and then return via the Cliff Trail (more challenging and better views) and Wapack trail. Trailhead: To south trailhead (Petersborouth): Miller Park Rd. 119 North, right on Mason Rd, 124 West, 31 North, 123 North, 45 North, and 101 West. You will find the entrance to the Miller Park on your right. There is a $3 fee per person. You may want to leave one car here. To the North trailhead: Old Mountain Rd in greenfield. 2.6mi W of NH 31 or 4.3 E of US 202 via Sand Hill Rd. from Petersborough, NH. Enter the woods on the S side of the road. Started on north side of mountain, summited north pack had lunch and came down...great afternoon hike! Great hike if your into a quick and not so strenuous climb. At times it's aggrevating to see the trail skirting the mountain but the view at the tops great. Made for a great morning hike. Started the day at South Pack Monadnock. Sumitted via the warpack trail, which had some nice scrambles and a few icy spots but nothing a keen eye can't avoid. Reached the top and witnessed some real nice views. Decended down via warpack to the base of North Pack Monadnock. This climb was nice(although the foot of snow was a bit much, def could have used some crampons and poles)The last 20% of North Pack became a it more challanging only to be rewarded at the top for some fantastic scenery and peacefull bliss. Ate a good lunch and then decended the warpack(will have to try the cliff trail next time)Made it to South PAck and started the most difficult climb of the day. Got to top decended via marion davis. Great trip. Hiked the Wapack trail up to North Pack Monadnock first, then over to (South) Pack Monadnock and down the other side via the Wapack trail. Temperatures were about 45 all day. There was some ice on the trail at different spots, but not too hard to get around by looking for bare rock or walking on the edges of the trail. Traction devices like Stabilicers or Yaktraks might have been helpful. This was a really nice hike. Wow..this was definetley an experience like no other. We got up at 5:00 A.M., so we were a little tired to start out. As the day went on, we saw lots of animals and trees. The colors were beautiful! I can't believe I hadn't done this before. There were some problems, though. For one, it was really really cold. I'm a city girl, so I didn't have a bunch of hiking gear. If I attempt this again, I'll definetley be better prepared. All in all, a great trip. I would recommend this to anyone who's up for a challenge..and some cold weather. ;) Great stories. For icy cond use crampons. My buddy and I ran this section one day in Sept 89 from Monadnock to the start and then on to New Ipswich. I remember the beautiful views to the east and west and rolling both my ankles over on the descent from the observation tower. Our best memory of the trail was from the summit of one of the Mts. where we happened upon an amorous couple that didn't hear us approaching in time to gather themselves up from behind the berry bushes. We think we interupted a sport indigineous to that area probably known as co-ed naked blueberry picking. A friend and I did the whole 21 miles of the trail in April 2005. We started at North Pack Monadnock and ended at Nutting Hill Rd, Rt 119 in Ashburnham. We drove are car up the night before and left it in the parking lot in Ashburnham, then in the morning, drove to Greenfield and started our hike at 5:45 am. It was a great hike, beautiful scenery. Well worth it. We ended our hike at 5 pm. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous. You are responsible for informing yourself about these hazards and taking necessary precautions.
