Summary: If you're on the run while travelling Route 66, want to get your park passport stamped, and actually see something of what the national monument is all about, you can run along these paths and then hie thee to the Petrified Forest or the Grand Canyon. The trail takes you along the canyon rim through a Juniper Woodland. At two points on the way out, you can pause to peer at Sinagua cliff dwellings in the overhangs. On your way back, veer right to see a pit house and a pueblo. Signs along the way tell you about how the Sinagua made a living on this usually dry land. Once you have done your reading and your obligatory sight-seeing, you can move on. Trailhead: From Flagstaff: Take Interstate 40 east to exit 204. Proceed south to the visitor center parking lot. The trail begins just outside the visitor center, to the left of the main door. Would have hiked the Island Trail, but that's closed due to a rock slide. Very nice views, but very windy when we were there. Nice place to stretch your legs after a long drive.
