Summary: Catch green blazed Otter Hole trail by walking west on Snake Den Rd. The trail enters the woods at the end of the road and you'll pass several trail junctions along the way. At about the 1.3 mile mark make left onto a red and white blazed trail (red dot on white circle) and head towards High Point. The trail joins the blue blazed Highlands Trail for a while, then leaves, turning right toward the nearly treeless summit where there are outstanding views in all directions.Continue down the east side and trail will soon join a yellow and white bazed trail. Together they cross a stream at Blue Mine and soon the yellow trail leaves to the right. Continue on the red past Roomy Mine which is an interesting side trip on a short, orange blazed trail. The red trail soon meets the yellow trail again. Turn left onto the yellow trail and you will reach a scenic waterfall. Shortly the yellow re-joins the red trail and together they end at Snake Den Road near the parking area. Trailhead: Route 287 to Wanaque exit. Take Wanaque Ave (CR 511) north. Following signs for Weis Ecology Center, make left onto Westbrook Rd. Bear left at fork. Make second left onto Snake Den Rd. Parking is on right just after the pink quonset hut. High Point (and "false High Point") have great views and well worth the effort . Also check out Roomy Mine: unique and fun. Blue Mine had water at the entrance so we could'nt do that one. Bring a flashlight! The trail also has a nice waterfall and interesting rock outcroppings. A must do hike! wyonokie was an intence trail and it was a good workout Great hike to a great view ontop of the overlook. If you squint, bring binoculars, or a good telephoto lens, you can see NYC way off in the distance from the summit. BE CAREFUL FINDING YOUR WAY DOWN. You can backtrack, but what fun is that...so we got lost and couldn't find the trail on the way down. A friend later told us that there is VERY faint blaze labelled on the rock that signifies a sharp switchback. Plan to go back one day to look for it myself. It was a very nice hike and the view from High Point was breathtaking. However...Make sure that you go down the same way you came up...otherwise, you will end up miles and miles away from your car. We saw deer and it was a very natural, challenging trail. Definitely would recommend this trail to anyone..just make sure you know where you are going. I must agree with Susan's post. An excellent, excellent hike. The view from High Point, in particular, is majestic. I look forward to exploring further on my next visit. Wow what a great hike. The best of Northern Jersey in my book. The trails were well marked, but the map at the Weis center helped. It marked various points of interest. I can't wait to see what a spring/summer hike is like. Thanks for a great day. great hike.lots to see.one of the best views in nj from high point.reminds me of the adirondacks, but obviously much smaller.trails should be marked better though The start of the hike was great and going to the top of the mountain was fantastic. you'll feel like you're on top of the world although not as high as many upstate n.y. hikes but very enjoyable views. HERE'S THE BAD PART--------"I GOT LOST AFTER LEAVING THE MOUNTAIN TOP!" IN THE START OF MY DECENT FROM THE MOUNTAIN TOP I THOUGHT I WAS FINE BUT NOTICED AFTER A LONG ALMOST 2 HOUR HIKE BACK DOWN I DEFINITLY NOTICED THAT SOMETHINGS WRONG! I STARTED TO GET NERVOUS BECAUSE I DID'NT FEEL I WAS GETTING ANY CLOSER TO THE END OF THE HIKE BACK TO WHERE MY CAR IS. TO MAKE THIS A SHORT STORY, I ENDED UP IN A DIFFERENT TRAIL PARKING AREA ,"8 MILES AWAY!!!" MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A VERIFIABLE TRAIL MAP! and that the map is UPDATED!!!!too many trails he Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
