Summary: Starting at Lock 56 and extending 21 miles to Big Pool, the Western Maryland Rail Trail is a beautiful change of pace for those who have been through-biking the C&O Canal Towpath. Pavement! The western end of the trail is the most wilderness of the WMRT sections and I look forward to the extension that will take the trail 4.5 miles further west to the Indigo Tunnel and Little Orleans and the ambitious long term plans to go almost to Cumberland. It would feature 6 bridges across the Potomac and 3 tunnels. Trailhead: Take the MD-144/US-40 Scenic exit 77 south onto Woodmont Rd. Travel south about 6 miles where Woodmont turns right and becomes Pearre Rd. The large parking area is a mile from that on the right. There are portajohns but no water. A short distance west of the parking area is a connector to the C&O Canal Towpath.
