The Terrain in the park is mainly rolling with some cliffs in areas. Most of the hike goes through the Wawayanda Natural area. The forest in the area is a transition forest off southern and Northern species. The Northern species are Beach, Yellow Birch and Hemlock trees with an understory of Rhododendrons. The Rhododendrons are so thick you cant even step off the trail and they form dark tunnels. This is the reason Wawyanda is called a Jungle. Eventually you go through a large Rare White Atlantic Cedar Swamp. This is a species found along the shore region, not common in the higher elevations. Throughout the hike you will pass three lakes. Laurel pond, Lake Lookout and Wawayanda Lake. The park is also a great place for Cross Country Skiing and snowshoeing.

Nice hike, not over strenuous as I prefer but good enough to get the blood flowing. The best part was my encounter with a juvenile black bear. I must have startled him from behind bc he growled viciously and then scrambled up a nearby tree. Next time I go I'm wearing snowshoes!

We had a beary beary good day. After about ten hikes through the park and only one bear sighting, we had four different bear sightings. WOW -1st one was at a trail intersection in the southeast section of the park near Clinton road. A beary big 500lb male. 2nd was a female who was on the trail in front of us and wouldn't move- we turned around and changed our plans. I fumbled with the camera and never got off a good photo :(

Did this hike over the weekend. With the fall colors near peak, it was a scenic walk and I really enjoyed it. So much so, that I came here and planned on adding the hike to Localhikes and saw the exact route I took was already posted here. It's particularly nice in the fall, but I'm sure its a pleasant walk any time of the year.
