San Gabriel River - West Fork

Highlights:

Peaceful river, wild trout, wooded canyon, great blue heron, level trail
Near:Azusa, CA
Scenery:
Distance:13 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:500 ft
Hike Time:5.5 hours
Difficulty:Easy
Trail Condition:Fire road/pavement
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This is a wonderful hike or bike ride for the entire family. The scenery is spectacular, the trail as good as it gets, with bathrooms and picnic tables along the trail. If you enjoy fly fishing, this is also a designated wild trout stream, with catch and release restrictions. The entire trail is within sight and sound of the lovely San Gabriel River, with trees shading almost the entire length of the trail. Just after a rainfall, small waterfalls abound on the left side of the trail.

I enjoyed seeing almost a half dozen giant blue herons rising from the water like prehistoric birds with their giant wingspan. Watch the kids if they scramble along the creek, as I also saw a fat rattler on this hike as well. My destination on this hike was arbitrary (Glen Camp), but you can shorten the hike to suite your tastes (Note the scenery does get progressively nicer the further upstream you go). There are also 3 or 4 handicap fishing platforms along the trail.

Trailhead: From Interstate 10 or the 210 freeway, exit on Azusa and head north 12 miles or so, paralleling the San Gabriel Dam on your right. Park on the left at the signed trail head, about a mile past Rincon Ranger station. Your trail is a paved road runs parallel to the stream on the left side of the water. (Lat:34.2415 Lon:-117.86855)

Beautiful walk, very peaceful. Some grafite in the begining but don't let that stop you, walk back a few miles and it just gets better. We saw 4 small waterfalls on the left, water level is low hopefully we will get some rain soon.

Have been going here since I was 13 am now 46. Took my 7 yr son on Thursday afternoon for a bike/hike/fishing trip. It's a bummer to see how the scenery at the beginning the trail has been turned ugly by the bums who spray the graffiti. After the first bridge about a mile in it gets less but these kooks even spray it on the rocks in the middle of the stream. It is truly a beautiful place. During our wet season a couple years ago we counted thirteen waterfalls back to the Pasadena Fishing Club's cabin. I think good and respectful people need to converge on these places every weekend so they can crowd the destructive kooks out of the available parking spaces.

Despite some of the negative reviews, this is a fantastic trail. For the first 7 miles it is paved asphalt with a really easy, gradual incline, making the return trip all downhill. There are waterfalls, and the ambiance of the river setting is fantiastic. I biked the path -- and it's my personal favorate out of all of Los Angeles. Parking is easy, there are restrooms at the parking lot. It was clean, quiet, safe, and not crowded on a Saturday afternoon.

this is such a good bike ride I have not went for about 1 year but it so nice once you get back in there there are beautiful seasonal waterfalls the first one is at the 3 mile marker. the begining of the hike is ugly but after the begining it gets more woodsy and pretty.

This is a bad trail that I personally would never take my family to. I would only hike with a group of guys and maybe not even then. There are too many gang members around to even feel safe and the graffiti is horrendous. The scene in the beginning of the trail is comparable to what you might find in TJ. Six years ago I was almost jumped by four gang members and they stole my bike pump. Been back since but just for the drive. STAY AWAY! seriously.

It's very sad that such a beautiful and peacefull place can be in such a condition that it turn off people who love the outdoors. I live about 8 miles from the west fork and used to go there quite often to hike and fish. The fishing was great and one could walk for an hour without encountering a single soul. This was about 15 years ago. About 5 years ago we went up there for the last time. The place was so filthy it made one sick. The gang-bangers left their marking on every good size rock for a mile up from the trail head. At every bend of the river there was trash from dirty diapers to beer/wine containers and even smolthering embers from dumped barbques. We found our car with two broken windows and NEVER and I mean NEVER went back.
