Summary: The Whitetrail Trail runs across the top of Chestnut Ridge from Lick Hollow to the Quebec Run Wild Area through State Forest and State Game Lands. A challenging trail, the lack of hiker trafic can allow the trail to become overgrown and obscured by ferns. Pay attention to the blue blazes.

In the past, this area was heavily forested and is still criss-crossed by abandonded logging roads. While it can be hot in mid-June, that is also the time that the Mountain Laurel blooms.

One short bypass is to continue up Pine Knob Trail from Lick Hollow to the Pine Knob overlook. The expansive view is highly recomended. Another rigorous 2.5 mile side trip is to White Rocks. In 1810, Polly Williams fell to her death from these rocks. She was rumored to have been murdered; pushed off by her reluctant fiancee. In more recent times, rock climbers have obtained permission from the private owners to climb the sandstone faces.

Trailhead: The northern terminus of the trail is in Lick Hollow Picnic Area right off of Route 40, midway between Hopwood and the Summit Inn. Lick Hollow has parking, picnic benches, restrooms and water. However, the gate is locked between sunset and 10am and between November and May and also on Tusedays and Wednesdays. (whew.) There is room for a few vehicles at the Rt. 40 entrance but there is an almost .5 mile trek from the gate to the trailhead. (N39 51.803 W79 40.701)

There is a parking area along Skyline Drive that cuts the trail into 6/4 lengths. Turn off Rt. 40 at the big Laurel Caverns sign. There are no facilities. (N39 48.475 W79 41.628)

The southern terminus is at the North Gate of the Quebec Run Wild Area. Skyline Drive makes a hairpine right and Quebec Run Rd. continues on to the left. This is a rocky, rutted dirt road that is not plowed and impassible in the winter. The parking area has no facilities. (N39 46.041 W79 40.876) (Lat:39.86339 Lon:-79.67835)
