Summary: There is much information available (easy to find on the web, especially at the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park site) about the Wilson family and the time spent living at Red Rock Canyon. This concrete slab foundation in Pine Creek is know as the Wilson Homestead, although there is another (lesser known) in Sandstone Canyon, which still contains many artifacts. This homestead site is located in the most perfect spot imaginable -- the meadows are often lush and moist, with Pine Creek within an easy stroll of the site. The view of Mescalito is perfect as you gaze W, and the view looking E down canyon is especially captivating at sunrise. I never tire of admiring the ponderosa pines that line Pine Creek, or the brilliant red rocks along the mouth of the canyon. The one thing in very short supply at the homestead/meadows is solitude. This is a VERY popular canyon, although most people take either the shorter ecology trail, or continue far past the homestead.
Trailhead: Be advised that the USGS topo does NOT accurately reflect the location of the scenic loop road within Red Rock National Conservation Area. 18 miles W of Las Vegas Blvd. on Charleston Ave (SR 159) to Red Rock entry (fee) station. Take the scenic loop to Pine Creek parking (fills up early). Descend steep trail down hill and head W towards the canyon, walking past the ecology trail and the sign for Dale's Trail. The concrete slab foundation from the old Wilson homestead is located on the L (S) side of this main trail, a little more than 1 mile from the pkg lot. To return, just retrace your steps and climb the steep trail back up to the parking lot. Do NOT hike in the afternoon in the summer. Although there is water, do not drink it, bring plenty of water for yourself and your dog. (Lat:36.12389 Lon:-115.48434)

Worth Checking out Horace's place and take the left side of mescalito up a seasonal brook for some bushwacking and small scrambles. Great views for the required effort.

A great spot to have a break or lunch. I am taking my Weblos 1 Scouts, to Pine Creek, this weekend. Probably our sixth time there.
