Summary: This wonderful shady hikes ascends up a deep cut canyon, through which Winter Creek flows on its way to merge with Santa Anita Creek. The floor of the canyon is covered with a lush ivy like ground cover, a multitude of trees, large rock faces, and a lovely burbling creek. The morning I did this hike, I heard a symphony of birds, with a large owl swooping down the stream and landing almost directly in front of me. Along Winter creek you will see a few cabins built in the 30's and a series of Lincoln Log like check dams. Follow the paved road down into Santa Anita canyon, across a bridge, and bear left on the marked Lower Winter Trail. About 1.5 miles up Winter creek you'll pass through Hoegee Camp. Just past the camp you will pass two trail junctions, the second of which will be the Upper Winter Creek trail, which will take back to a fire road just above the Chantry flat parking area. Note that the upper trail has some very steep drop-offs so watch your step. Trailhead: From the Foothill Freeway(210) in Arcadia, exit on Santa Anita Avenue and drive six miles north to its end at Chantry Flat. The trail begins across the road from the parking lot. Close to wear I bought my new boots. Good break 'em in hike. Some flowers in bloom. Water levels not very high. Some pictures and video are on my blog. http://tomkiesche.wordpress.com/2013/03/02/new-boots-new-adventure-pass-old-standby-winter-creek-trail-sturtevant-falls/ Today Wed June 20th. I went to hike in Chantry Flat, combine 2 trails. Starting from trial head walked down to the fall, happy to see the good amount of water still. Then walked back to Camp Robert instead walk back to the parking lot we turn right to the trail to Hoegee campground. I had done this about 4 times still love it. Actually I went with 6 people a month ago but we did not walked to the fall because we have some beginners. The best way not to hike back to the parking lot from the fall is go back on Hoegee campground and then loop back to Upper Winter Creek. So either do 5 and a half miles loops which means from the trail head walk down to the bridge where the restroom is or this spot use to be Robert Camp here. This trail is turn Hiked today but I typically go every weekend to one of the hikes that leaves from Chantry Flats. Sat and Sun the parking lot is full by 7am at the latest. Today (Thursday) I had my pick of 30 spots at 9:30 in the morning. The hike is marvelous as usual. Wonderful shade on the lower trail (chilly at times - bring layers). The creek is running nicely but nothing that makes crossing difficult. The upper trail has more sun and beautiful views. I always recommend doing this loop down the fire road, to Hoegee's by the lower trail, then back to Chantry by the upper trail. This lets you warm up after resting at Hoegee's and avoids walking up the fire road at the end. My family and I went on this hike on MLK day. We got there at 10.30am and the parking lots were completely full, including the lot for the packing station. I had to park our car on the side of the road about 0.7 miles away from the trailhead. If you plan to hike in any of the trails in the Big Santa Anita Canyon or in Chantry Flat, I suggest you get there EARLY in the morning. The first half-mile is a steep descend on paved road, this also means that at the end of your trip, you'll be facing a steep incline back to your vehicle, so plan accordingly. The trail to Sturtevant Falls is very nice with dirt roads, plenty of tree cover and a few creek crossing. When you get to the Falls, it is a great place to sit and relax. Next time I go Error: Reserved Word Found: ; Fun hike in the winter! Crossed maybe 5 streams, and the water level was a bit higher due to the rains. Bring an extra pair of socks in case you fall in. A few mountain bikers on the trail, but not busy at all compared to the hike going downhill to the waterfall. This is a nice hike, especially since it is a loop. If you are into native plants all of the invasive ivy might bother you, and watch out for the poison oak right at the edge of the trail on the second half of the hike. That said it's a very nice 5 miles with a lot of diversity. The first part takes you along Winter Creek and is shady and riparian, then you come out to pretty views with sage, yucca, laurel sumac etc. Must be lovely in the spring. Amazing hike! Lush greenary and gorgeous mountain range views. Easy to find, park and get onto the trail. The 1000ft gain in elevation was hardly noticeable. The cottages and dams were cool sites to explore. It's always fun to cross cross streams. It took us a little over two hours. It would be nice to bring lunch next time and eat at hoagie's camp at the half way point. They have fire pits too!
