Summary: The trail north of Ohiopyle begins with the Low and High Bridges. Between them if the Ferncliff Nature Area and trails on either side of the river show the the falls the prompted George Washington to abandon his all-water route to the forks of the Ohio in 1754. As you continue north, you will notice markers two letters on each. These are emergency take-out points for the various rapids downstream. Take a side trail down to see. There are no trailside facilities along this section and between Connellsville and Ohiopyle you'll cross only two back roads. Very highly recommended. Trailhead: The Ohiopyle trailhead is at the Visitor Center just off Route 381. (lat: N39 52.185 lon: W79 29.501) Rest rooms, restaurants, hotels, campsites, boat rentals and 79 miles of trails plus the Laural Highlands Hiking Trail Camp Carmel is a private campsite and so there is no public access at this place roughly midway between Connellsville and Ohiopye though it might be usable in an emergency situation. Trail Reviews Submit your own review I have just received an update that renovations to the Ohiopyle High Bridge will be ongoing until JUNE of 2006. There are still plans to have the bridge open on weekends but that may change on a week-to-week basis depending on how construction is progressing. Again, the only available bypass is along the Great Gorge Trail. A news item: The Ohiopyle High Bridge is undergoing renovations during the first quarter of 2006 and will be closed on weekdays until April. The bridge will be opened weekends and holidays. For though hikers and bikers who may be coming through on a weekday, you'll have to follow the Great Gorge Trail and Rt 381 for about two miles around the Ferncliff Loop of the Yougiogheny River. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous. You are responsible for informing yourself about these hazards and taking necessary precautions. A current guidebook and proper equipment are essential for safe enjoyment of the hikes posted on this site.
