Summary: There is very little to recommend the trail through McKeesport except that it is the northern terminus of the Yough River Trail. From town to the 15th Street Bridge, the trail surface is soft and sandy so that when it gets wet, bike tires leave deep ruts. It seems almost an afterthought, cutting through empty lots and up disused driveways. Only after crossing the river approaching the Durabond Bypass does the trail surface become the even, crushed limestone typical of the rest of the trail into Maryland. From the 15th St. Bridge to Eden Park there is a 1.5 mile spur that is paved. Through-bikers on their way south would do well to start their trek at Boston. Trailhead: The McKeesport trailhead is immediately off of Lyle Boulevard in McKeesport at the Eastern end of the 5th Avenue Bridge. (N40 21.085 W79 52.101) There are no facilities here but a Get-Go convience store is a two blocks into town. The trail does not actually start at the parking lot. You must travel a few blocks down Water Street to the circle at the end of 9th Avenue. The Boston trailhead is just off Route 48 at the south end of the Boston Bridge. Turn at the light onto W. Smithfield and then immediately right down to the parking lot. (lat: N40 18.675 lon: W79 49.652) The Boston trailhead has water, porta-johns and a seasonal snack and bike shop.
