Summary: The beauty of the Southern Ohiopyle section of the trail rivals that of the Northern section. Rapids abound and there are plenty of places to leave the trail and find your way down to the rivers edge. Approaching Confluence is a place known as Turkeyfoot, the confluence of Laurel Hill Creek, the Youghiogheny and Cassleman Rivers. George Washington slept here in 1754 and there is a plaque here telling you all about it. Confluence is also the connecting point to the Allegheny Highlands Trail which continues 30 miles to Meyersdale and will eventually extend to Cumberland, Md and the C&O Canal Towpath. The TOPO! Overlay file included with this review contains data for the entire 70 miles of the Youghiogheny River Trail from McKeesport to Confluence. Trailhead: The Ohiopyle trailhead (mile 10) is at the Visitor Center just off Route 381. (lat: N39 52.185 lon: W79 29.501) Rest rooms, restaurants, hotels, campsites, boat rentals and 79 miles of trails plus the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. The Confluence trailhead (mile 0) is behind the Riversport shop on the Eastern side of the Rt. 281 bridge. There are porta-johns at the lot but no water available at the shop. Camping facilities (and water) are available further up towards the Youghiogheny River Dam. Shops and restaurants are available in the town of Confluence itself. Trail Reviews Submit your own review We rode from Confluence to Ohiopyle on a Sunday in mid June. Our group was 17, including 2 teens and 8 riders under 13 years. It was a pleasant ride, took us about 2 hours at a very easy pace, including breaks. The temperature was warm, but the shaded route kept us comfortable. The river views were really nice. The trail is mostly smooth, crushed limestone, but there were a few rocky parts. Definitely a fat-tire type of ride. Everything was very well maintained. We saw numerous other riders on this section. We stopped a few times to explore the river bank and catch critters. At the end in Ohiopyle we waded in the water and later had some ice cream. Nice!
