Summary: Just up the hill from the Layton trailhead is the Washington Grist Mill. George Washington purchased 1,600 acres here in 1769 where he built a grist mill and distillery. This section of trail features two sets of mile markers. The original P&LE markers measuring rail miles to Pittsburgh and the new plastic Great Allegheny Passage merkers for trail miles to Cumberland. Trailhead: The Whitset trailhead is accessed off of Rt. 51 by turning East on Whitsett Hill Rd. South of Wickhaven. (lat: N40 6.440 lon: W79 45.349) The trailhead at Layton is accessed by following Layton Rd. out of Perryopolis and turning right just before the tunnel. The lot is just to the left at the bottom of the hill..
