Summary: This trail goes from the Abita Springs Tourist Park to the St. Tammany Tourist Info Center. From the Tourist Park, head east on the trace and it will soon head south. Most of the trail is a paved, former railroad bed. There is also a grassy/dirt horse trail that runs alongside much of the paved area. I found the horse trail more enjoyable to travel on. The trail has a few scenic bridges. When you reach the green cabose near the water tower, leave the trace and head towards Hwy 59 (east). Travel south on 59 to the St. Tammany Tourist Center. There is an interesting boardwalk over a swampy area. They also have lots of pamphlets and free coffee and Abita Springs Water. There is also a board walk from behind the parish admin building to the info center, but it is a little hard to find. All in all, this is a nice place to go and still be close to town. The trace can be hot in summer, but is very nice the rest of the year. Trailhead: Start at the Abita Springs Tourist Park. This park is located near the junctions of Highways 36 and 59. If you find the Abita Brew Pub, you are close. You should be able to fill you canteens with Abita Springs water at the park. This water is believed to have medicinal properties. Actually goes from Covington, thru Abita Springs, past the St. Tammany Tourist Trailhead, thru Mandeville to the Mandeville Trailhead (with a nice side bike/hiking path to the Mandeville Lakefront along Lake Pontchartrain). It continues east along the north shore of L. Pontchartrain, thru Mandeville, thru Fontainbleau State Park, to Lacombe where it is interrupted by an impassible (for now) bridge at Bayou Lacombe. It picks up on the east side of the bayou and continues to Slidell. It is roughly 10 feet wide all the way, blacktopped. Great for road bikes, mtn bikes, walking or strollers. Several road crossings at the towns. The most secluded stretch between the Mandeville Trailhead and Lacombe. It is growing, ck back Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
